Aerial Work Platforms: Master Safe Operating Procedures
Aerial Work Platforms: Master Safe Operating Procedures
Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs) are common on Ontario constructions sites. However, there are a number of fairly straight – forward directions that must be followed when using this type of equipment. Please refer to the following list for operation/maintenance of AWPs.
Basic Safe Operating Procedures
- Only a trained worker may operate an AWP (training is specific to the class of AWP).
- The operator must provide their training certificate upon request.
- An AWP shall be inspected each day before use by a trained worker/operator.
- A written/documented inspection checklist shall be placed within the weatherproof container located on the AWP, together with the manufacturer’s operating manual and engineered letter.
- A Professional Engineer must certify in writing that the AWP complies with the applicable National Standards.
- An annual maintenance and inspection tag and/or decal must be present on the AWP, valid within one year.
- AWPs and other work platforms shall only be operated on a firm level base.
- Maintain specified distances from any overhead energized power lines or equipment.
- Guardrails shall be utilized on all AWPs. This includes entry chains or bars. These safety devices must always be secured prior to use.
- Working outside the confines of the work platform or bucket is prohibited.
- Workers’ feet must always remain on the platform of the lift (i.e. – standing on the mid rail or using ladders, planks, or makeshift devices to gain height is prohibited).
- Exiting/entering an AWP at height is prohibited without written approval from Project Management. Obtain and complete a permit.
- Personal fall protection systems are required when working from an AWP. The system must include a full body harness and lanyard, and must be connected to the approved anchor point at all times, whether the AWP is in motion or not.
- Never tie off to the top rail or mid rail of the equipment’s guardrail system.
- Tying off to an adjacent pole, structure, or equipment while working from an AWP is not permitted.
- When travelling or moving an AWP from location to location the work platform must be lowered.
- Materials and tools must not be carried or hung on the guardrails of the lift.
- AWPs must not be used for hoisting or lifting materials, unless the lift is engineered and approved for such use.
- Materials loaded onto an AWP shall not exceed the maximum rating capacity of the lift, and all material shall be securely fastened to prevent it from falling to a work surface below.
- When performing hot work activities, a fire extinguisher must be present and secured on the lift.
- Use barricading methods/signage to identify the area below the platform to warn others of overhead hazards.

It is possible to complete elevating work platforms theory online at any time, and finish practical assessment in class.
