What Is WHMIS And Who Must Know It?

The Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (introduced in 1988) is a communication standard through which Canadian employees are informed about the possible perils they may face in their work environment.

There are three main components of this system:
– Labeling of the hazardous materials and substances.
– Material safety data sheets (MSDS), that provide additional information about a certain substance.
– Methods for proper handling.

The Canadian law states that a WHMIS program is mandatory for any company that operates with hazardous materials. As of November 15, 2015, the system will acquire some modifications to the classification and labeling of hazardous substances, as well as to the Safety Data Sheet format. The new WHMIS 2015 incorporates an international classification and labeling of chemicals, called GHS (Globally Harmonized System). There will be a three-year transition, when both the old WHMIS 1988 and WHMIS 2015 can be used simultaneously by employers.
